Cocks Moor Swimming Pool, Kings Heath

This is the best family friendly pool in Birmingham, or if it isn’t someone needs to tell me. As part of a leisure centre there is a whole load more to the place than just the pool but the pool is the only bit I know about.

The water doesn’t get deeper than about six foot so you can supervise a toddler in armbands and hold a newborn without too many problems, has a flume/slide although I haven’t often seen it in action, mushrooms that spout water, large bucket sized coloured cups that tip water randomly, a big “tap” showering water, a jacuzzi for adults, small slide in shallow area for little ones… and a wave machine.

You can wheel a buggy through the changing rooms to the side of the pool which makes things so much easier, not sure how hygienic that is but I won’t be complaining as the convenience wins out.

The changing rooms aren’t very big and it is a bit of a free for all to get somewhere to change in busy periods.  Family changing rooms are provided and a great idea and open to all sexes which makes a lot of sense.  The baby changing stations in at least one of these has been crudely screwed up out of action for as long as I can remember which looks a bit tatty.

Lockers work by way of a wriststrap thing you have to pay for and lose 50p on the transaction or at least that used to be the system.  I never bothered with it and just piled everything in the buggy and wheeled it to the side of the pool.

The cafe does the normal sort of things, beans on toast/sandwiches/jacket potatoes etc.. but doesn’t take cards which I always forget.  The cutlery is plastic and the plates are paper which can be interesting if you get a hard spud.

On a Friday they used to do a softplay in the gym and a swim thrown in for a few quid and over the holidays there are loads of events.

There is a lovely playground outside with a pirate ship, swings and climbing equipment suitable for small kids, up to about 7 or 8 I suppose, a great bonus.

Treasure Island, Northfield.

I am fond of this compact soft play as it is small enough that you never really lose sight of your child, although of course the corollary is that they might get bored more quickly than at the larger places.

It has many children’s style “arcade” machines and air hockey etc… and the food is very well priced if on the basic side.  The smaller children’s area is excellent with cosy coupe cars and a ball pit, dressing up and wendy houses etc.

It is very easy to miss the turning – it is in a small industrial unit on the left as you go down Bristol Road South – not long after you pass the Royal Orthopedic Hospital and the associated parked cars on the road there is a row of shops and the entry to the place is through some gates on the left opposite a sign on the right hand verge.  There is limited parking which is another disadvantage.

Hickory Dickory’s, Kings Heath.

One of the largest soft plays in the area  – if not THE largest.  It has an sizable cafe area, tons of seating and enough to entertain ages up to about 7 or 8.

The under 5’s area is particularly well organised, a good size with a climbing area as well as the obligatory ball pit and wendy house.

There are two trampolines and a small football area and many kids seem to adore just running about in the spaces in between – it’s not a claustrophobic place.

The large soft play area seems to be great from about 4 upwards; my near four  year old can mostly get himself about it but a couple of months ago he got stuck a lot and needed rescuing.  Depends how agile your child is of course.

Pros – well stocked, well run, good size.  Cons – tends to be a bit pricier than the others.
