Nature Centre at Cannon Hill Park.

Pros – its about 3 quid to get in, you only pay for adults and you could kill an afternoon here.  There is a play area too and you have the mac and Cannon Hill Park to hand.  The lemurs are jolly.

Cons – it could be my bad luck but it lacks animals – they’re either shy or often hiding.  My sons favourite incumbent was a domestic cat that was wandering about.

I have just attached the wikipedia entry as I can’t find an official website and am charmed to read that the resident red panda once escaped by being blown out of a tree.  After being found by a dog walker he was reunited with his brother panda, live on Midlands Today.

Blown out of a tree?! Just how small are red pandas?  Having been to this venue several times I must have peered in his enclosure but I can’t say I’ve seen any red pandas.  Maybe we visited when he was on the run.

Sea Life Centre at Brindleyplace.

The main con about this place is the expense.  It is at least 15 quid per adult and the children’s concessions aren’t great.  It doesn’t take very long to walk through the whole thing and with my kids (yes they probably are spoilt or maybe they’re just too young) once you’ve seen one fish you’ve seen them all.  There is a soft play area at the top which provides a little more amusement but it’s small.

As an adult it is enjoyable – there are gorgeously designed tanks and walkways but it always seems to be a short visit and we feel a bit short changed.

Pros – if you have fish lovers it would be good or the sort of kids that take time to enjoy each exhibit rather than race about.  Older children may get more out of it than the under fives.  Cons – the cost!
